WBEMS Receives Red Cross Award PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 June 2006
Bill Lillington and Western Berks EMS received the American Red Cross’ Heroes Award for Community Service Impact Hero.  The annual award, in its second year, is co-sponsored by Channel 69 News - Berks Edition and is presented to a community group, local company or individual that consistently demonstrates a commitment to making a difference in the community.  Western Berks EMS was recognized for their Three Seconds to Life and Dare to Care programs.

The Three Seconds to Life program is a video production promoting seat belt usage among teens.  The video is the story of Tabitha Impink, a Tulpehocken High School teen who was tragically killed in an accident.  Her parents and friends tell of how the accident and the loss of Tabitha have affected them.  This video has received attention in the Pennsylvania from state education associations who will be distributing the video statewide to school districts.  The video was shown during the awards ceremony and Western Berks immediately received requests for the video.  During the awards ceremony, Bill Lillington dedicated the award to Tabitha Impink and will be presenting the award to Tabitha's parents for their tireless effort, support and participation in the Three Seconds to Life video program.

The Dare to Care program was started by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Western Berks EMS jumped at the opportunity to bring it to Berks County.  The program is aimed at giving the passerby basic instruction and equipment that will enable them to make the right choice and stop at the scene of an accident to render basic care.  This program has been presented to over 6,000 high school students in the Conrad Weiser, Fleetwood, Muhlenberg, Tulpehocken, Wilson and Wyomissing School Districts.

Western Berks EMS would like to congratulate Schuylkill Valley EMS for receiving the Medical Hero award.  Three members of Schuylkill Valley EMS; Stephen Bobella , Craig Huntsinger and Fred Massa, were honored for their participation in the relief efforts last fall when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans.  They were part of an EMS Strike Team that was sent to the area by Pennsylvania to offer medical assistance to the people in need.
