Mission Statement:

The Temple Fire Company's mission is to protect life and property from loss, suffering, and damage due to fire, medical, and environmental emergencies within the community through public education, community involvement, and incident response.

The Temple Fire Company is a volunteer fire department which not only provides the obvious function of fire suppression, but also provides numerous other prevention and protection tasks. These tasks include emergency medical response, public information, fire safety inspections, public education, a fire prevention program within the Muhlenberg Township School District, fire training, as well as communication, facility, apparatus and equipment maintenance.

 

ORDER PLACED FOR NEW HEAVY RESCUE TRUCK
   
The members of the Temple Fire Company No. 1 are proud to announce the signing of contract with Rescue 1 Emergency Vehicles and Spartan Motors to build the new Rescue 11. Some of the new Rescue 11's features include - Spartan Gladiator ELFD chassis with seating for 8 firefighters with climate control for rehab and command operations, 515HP Detroit Diesel S60 engine, Allison 4000 EVS transmission, Rescue 1 Non Walk-in 24'4" stainless steel rescue body, 20' vertical mast light tower, front bumper mounted HURST Combi-tool & electric Sawzall both with Hannay Reels, curb side retractible awning, Eagle Air Safestation X2 cascade, oil dry hopper with pnuematic valve, multiple hydraulic & electric reels, complete LED lighting package, all wrapped up with gleaming lime yellow paint. The new Rescue 11 is expected to arrive by mid to late 2009.  We will update the web site throughout the construction process. Along with the new Heavy Rescue, we will be updating and expanding tools and equipment related to the trucks function.


 
 
BUSY DAY FOR TEMPLE FIREFIGHTERS STARTS OUT WITH FATAL MVA
Tuesday November 4th turned out to be another busy day for Temple firefighters as they responded to five incidents, the first of which coming at 1137 hrs. in Maidencreek Township as Companies 12 and 11 were dispatched to Route 222 and Dries Road for a Motor Vehicle Accident with Entrapment. As units were responding, they received additional reports of one unconsious female still in a vehicle with CPR in progress, and one vehicle on fire. The vehicle fire contained to the engine compartment and extinguised with a dry chemical extinguisher and the victim was confirmed DOA. With on immediate rescue needed, Chief 12 released Company 11 at 1205 hrs.

The second call of the day came at 1410 hrs as Companies 11 & 37 were dispatched to Route 61 in the Hartman field for a reported combine on fire.  Chief 11 arrived first on location confirming a working fire. Engine 11-1 arrived next and went into service extinguishing the fire which was located in the engine compartment area. Firefighters then checked the grain bin area for any extension, which was negative. Company 11 went available at 1515 hrs. 

The third call of the day came at 1732 hrs. with Companies 10 & 11 being dispatched to Leisz's Bridge Road at Stoudt's Ferry for a Motor Vehicle Accident with injuries. With no fire services being needed Chief 10 recalled Company 11.

The fourth call of the day came at 1818 hrs. with Companies 10, 11 & 13 being dispatched to 2525 North 12th Street at the Reading Expo Center for an AFA which was investigated and found to be negative.

The fifth and final call of the day came at 2227 hrs. with Companies 10, 11, & 13 being dispatched to 3050 North 5th Street Hwy. @ Appleby's for an AFA. No fire was reported by employees on location and Company 11 returned to station at 2236 hrs.

LATE NIGHT SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN
On Saturday November 1st @ 2221 hrs. Companies 10 & 11 were dispatched to the Laurel Run Park along River Road to search for an 18 year old man who had gone missing after family members lost cell phone communications with him. After an incident briefing, members set out with with Thermal Imaging Cameras and hand lights to find the man.  Chief 10 then requested additional manpower from Company 13 and a helocopter to search from above due to the size of the area to be searched. No helos were available to aid in the search however, Birdsboro PD assisted with supplying two night vision instruments, Company 3 ( Stonersville ) also assisted with supplying an ARGO all terrain vehicle. Two search dogs were also brought in to help locate the man. After approx. 2 1/2 hours of searching, Chief 11 spotted the missing man walking along the street in a nearby community. After confirming that he was the individual everyone was looking for, Muhlenberg PD then escorted the man to Reading Hospital for a psychological evaluation. All companies cleared the incident at 0143 hrs.


 
 
STRUCK GAS LINE PROMPTS EVACUATION OF ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY
   
On Wednesday, October 15th at 0853 hrs. Companies 10 and 11 were dispatched to 2900 Lawn Terrace at the Rittenhouse for a reported gas line struck. Ladder 10 arrived first on location confirming a struck natural gas line on the buildings exterior. With that report, Chief 10 then requested Company 13 be dispatched to secure a water supply. Engine 11-1's crew assisted Company 10 with evacuating more than 100 residents and building staff. Chief 10 also requested numerous EMS units from around the County and City of Reading to aid in providing shelter to the elderly residents due to cold weather conditions. Two busses from BARTA also assited in the effort. After UGI secured the leak, firefighters monitored the building until it was deemed safe to re-enter, then assisted residents and staff back into the building. Company 11 cleared the incident at 1118 hrs.


 
 
STOLEN VEHICLE SET ABLAZE
On Sunday, September 28th at 1938 hrs. companies 11 & 10 were dispatched to 1243 Beaumont Avenue for a possible vehicle fire. A nearby resident called 911 reporting hearing explosions in the area of vacant mushroom houses located on Beaumont Avenue. Deputy 11 arrived first on location reporting a fully involved vehicle fire. Engine 11-1's crew extinguished the fire quickly and company 10 continued into the incident at reduced speed.  Upon further investigation by Muhlenberg Police, it was determined that the vehicle had been stolen and that the fire had been set intentionally. Company 11 returned to service at 2031 hrs.


 
   
   
 
HIGH SPEED MVA INVOLVING MULTIPLE MOTORCYCLES AND FIRE
On Wednesday, August 20th @ 2058 hrs. Companies 10 & 11 were dispatched to Rt. 222 west of Rt. 61 for a motorcycle accident with injuries and fire. Chief 10 arrived first on location reporting numerous people and motorcycles lying on both Northbound and Southbound lanes with one motorcycle on fire. Engine 11-1 arrived and went into service extinguishing the fire while other firefighters from companies 11 & 10 assisted EMS with packaging a total of 3 critical patients. Company 55 (Greenfields) was special called for another TIC to assist the crews with searching all areas including wooded areas for any unaccounted riders. After a primary and a secondary search, it was confirmed all riders were accounted for. Squad 670 and 650 assisted Muhlenberg Squad 560 with the patient care and transports.   Units were on scene for an extended time providing lighting for the police to investigate the accident and Company 11 cleared the incident @ 2348 hrs.

 
   
   
 
EARLY MORNING VEHICLE FIRE WITH EXTENSION TO A RESIDENCE
On the morning of Friday, August 15th at 0325 hrs. Companies 10 and 11 were dispatched to 608 Florida Avenue for a reported vehicle fire close to a structure.  Deputy 10 arrived first on location confirming a working vehicle fire. Engine 10-1 arrived next and went in service. Engine 11-1 was ordered to establish a water supply and lay in to Engine 10-1 due to the fire extending to the garage overhang. Temple firefighters also assisted with checking for extension inside the residence, controlling utilites, vehicle overhaul and ventilating the structure using PPV. Company 11 returned to station at 0432 hrs.

 
 
HAZ-MAT AT MUHLENBERG CHEMICAL FACILITY
On Thursday, August 14th at 1050 hrs. Comapnies 11 and 10 were dispatched to 125 Witman Road at Coyne Chemical for an unknown substance coming from a drain.  Chief 10 was first on location reporting an unknown liquid running across a roadway into a storm drain.  Firefighters from both Temple and Goodwill, with assistance from the ERG and the chemical facility, identified the liquid, located the source, prevented any futher liquid from entering the storm drain and checked a nearby waterway for any contamination.  Berks County EMA and DEP also responded to the incident.  Members from all agencies determined that the proper mitigation would be to secure the source, neutralize the substance and dilute with large amounts of water.  After applying Soda Ash and confirming neutralization with ph readings, the area was flushed using Engine11-1 and hydrant water. EMA and DEP then declared the scene as non-hazardous and Companies 11 and 10 cleared at 1248 hrs.

 
   
   
 
2 CRASHES IN 2 DAYS ON ROUTE 222
On Thursday, August 14th at 0831 hrs. Companies 12 and 11 were dipatched to Route 222 at the Maidencreek Appliance store for motor vehicle accident with reported entrapment, vehicle into a building. Nothern Berks Police was first on location reporting one vehicle into a building, negative entrapment, patient suffering from a medical emergency.  Rescue 11 arrived next and began patient assessment and structural size-up. Temple firefighters secured C-Spine and Company 12 members assisted with patient removal. Damage to the building was found to be minor with no major structural damage. Company 11 cleared the scene at 0905 hrs. 

 
   
   
 
MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH CONFINEMENT
On Wednesday, August 13th at 0733 hrs. Companies 12 and 11 were dispatched to Route 222 just south of Route 73 for Motor Vehicle Accident with Entrapment. Chief 12 arrived on location reporting two vehicles involved with confinement of the driver in one vehicle. Temple firefighters assisted Company 12 members with patient removal in both vehicles and fluid control. Company 11 cleared the incident at 0827 hrs.

 
   
   
 
SECOND MVA OF THE DAY BRINGS SUV VS. TREE WITH ENTRAPMENT
On Sunday June 29th, the sixth call of the day for Temple volunteers came at 1846 hrs. for a Motor Vehicle Accident with unknown injuries to the area of 1991 Mount Laurel Road in Alsace Township, Company 8 (Alsace) was also dispatched. Assistant 8 arrived first on location reporting 1 vehicle off the road with entrapment. Rescue 11's crew began extrication while being hindered by a 12 inch diameter tree branch which came through the sunroof and into the driver's area. Company 8 firefighters assisted with stabilizing the tree branch during the extrication. With the use of hydraulic rescue tools, Temple firefighters extricated the victim. Company 11 cleared the incident at 1931 hrs. Just another weekend at the "ELEVEN HOUSE".

 
   
   
 
MVA WITH ROLLOVER
On Sunday, June 29th at 0711 hrs. Company 11 and Rescue 10 were dispatched to the intersection of Business Rt. 222 and Leesport Ave. for a motor vehicle accident with possible entrapment. Additional report was of numerous calls reporting 2 vehicles involved with 1 on its side and a person lying on the ground. Deputy 11 arrived on location confirming one person who was self extricated lying on the ground being attended to by Squad 560, no ejection. "ELEVEN HOUSE" EMT's performed patient assessment collared and boarded 5 patients including 2 pediatrics. Members also controlled fluids from both vehicles. Company 11 cleared the incident at 0810 hrs.

 
   
   
 
ANOTHER TRACTOR TRAILER ROLLOVER ON RT. 222
On Friday, June 27th at 1437 hrs. Companies 11 & 10 were dispatched to the on ramp to Rt. 222 S. from Rt. 61 for a reported tractor trailer rollover with possible entrapment. Driver was self extricated prior arrival on location. Temple firefighters remained on location and assisted with fluid and scene control while the tractor trailer was being righted. Company 11 cleared the incident at 1611 hrs.

 
   
   
 
RESCUE BY GROUND LADDER TRAINING
On Thursday June 26th, Company 11 went to the Reading/Berks Fire Training Center to drill on rescue of consious and unconsious victims via ground ladders. Members also reviewed proper carries, raises and placement for excuting such rescues.

 
   
   
 
VERTICAL VENTILATION TRAINING
On Thursday May 29th members from Company 11 drilled on Vertical Ventilation Operations at the Reading/Berks Fire Training Center. This nights drill included review of the operation of different types of vent saws, proper ground ladder raises, roof ladder placement, and proper technigues for cutting both inspection holes and vent holes on a peaked roof.
